Emergency Management

Syilx Emergency Management is rooted in our inherent responsibilities to care for the tmxʷulaxʷ (land) and tmixʷ (all living things). The Emergency Management initiative brings people, resources, and information together to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies that may impact our community. It focuses on strengthening community readiness, communication, and resilience before, during, and after a crisis.

About

An emergency can be any event, such as severe weather, wildfires, flooding or drought, infrastructure failure, or even a digital/IT incident, that requires a prompt, coordinated response to safeguard people and minimize harm. This is guided by four key pillars:

  • Prevention & Mitigation – Reducing risks and impacts before emergencies occur.

  • Preparedness – Planning, training, and building capacity to respond effectively.

  • Response – Taking immediate action to protect life, property, and the environment when an emergency happens.

  • Recovery – Supporting community healing and restoring systems after an event.

Our Focus

The goal of Syilx Emergency Management is to build resilient communities who are prepared and supported before, during, and after a crisis. It strives to strengthen Nation-wide coordination and response in ways that reflect Syilx governance, culture, and traditional knowledge systems.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Supporting Member Community Capacity
Building tools, training, and collaboration that help communities lead their own emergency planning and response.
  • Developing a Syilx-Led Emergency Management Framework
Creating Nation-guided plans, protocols, and governance structures that reinforce shared responsibility and collective action.
  • Protecting and Restoring Ecological Resilience
Ensuring that land, water, and tmixʷ (all living things) are considered and protected in every phase of emergency management.
  • Strengthening Organizational and Nation Resilience
Enhancing coordination across departments, leadership, partners, and external agencies—so we are prepared, unified, and able to respond effectively.

Syilx Emergency Management is about being ready together, guided by our laws, our knowledge, and our responsibility to future generations of all living beings within our territory.
