Pacific Salmon Foundation Workshop

August 26 @ 9:00 am 2:30 pm

The overall purpose of the project – led by the Pacific Salmon Foundation – is to value the economic and cultural benefits that the wild Pacific salmon population provides to First Nations in British Columbia today. This estimate will supplement market-based economic estimates with community-informed valuation, with a strong emphasis on assessing the household, social, cultural, governance, stewardship, knowledge, and intergenerational values salmon supports for First Nations communities.

These values will be assessed primarily through qualitative evidence and indicators, with quantitative or monetary calculations included selectively where feasible and appropriate. To better understand and communicate the full value of wild Pacific salmon here in British Columbia, workshops will be hosted throughout the province to gather First Nations knowledge and community perspectives on the topic of community values through dialogue and discussion. Insights shared will be used to support informed decision-making and future planning, ensuring First Nation perspectives and stewardship priorities are meaningfully reflected.

Workshop Scope
These workshops are set up to identify and discuss First Nations cultural and community values supported by salmon and capture information on domains which are often overlooked, underrepresented, or not typically suited to monetary measurement. The data collected in these workshops will supplement market-based economic information, which is beyond the scope of the workshop.

Discussion Themes:

  • Food, Community Wellbeing and Cultural Continuity
  • Stewardship, Rights, and Knowledge Continuity
  • Local Livelihoods, Enterprises, and Community Economic Opportunity
