Upper Columbia River Chinook Broodstock Pilot Project

INFORMATION AND UPDATES | October 2026

This marks the second year of our ONA Upper Columbia Chinook Salmon Pilot Project.

The primary aim of this initiative is to gather adult Chinook salmon from the Upper Columbia for spawning. The offspring produced will be released back into the Upper Columbia to further enhance salmon reintroduction efforts in this region.

We employ a beach seine technique in areas where Chinook salmon are likely to gather. During the process, we carefully sort through the catch to release non-target native species (such as White Sturgeon and Rainbow Trout) while also removing invasive species. Beach seines are an excellent selective fishing method, allowing for the easy removal of fish from the net during capture.
