The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) joined First Nations women, Chiefs, Parliamentarians and human rights advocates at Parliament Hill on October 21, 2026, calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney and the federal government to urgently pass Bill S-2 as amended by the Senate.
The proposed legislation would remove the second-generation cut-off, a discriminatory rule under the Indian Act that can deny Indian status to First Nations people based on the status of their parents and grandparents. Advocates warn that these rules separate families, threaten the recognition of future generations and contribute to the legal erasure of First Nations communities.
UBCIC and its allies are calling on the federal government to end this longstanding discrimination and ensure First Nations families can maintain their connections to their families, communities and Nations.
