The Province issues a new temporary fish-protection order for Salmon River

The Province lifted the Salmon River akscʷin Temporary Protection Order on August 8, prompting the Syilx Okanagan Nation to advocate for its reinstatement.

On August 10, the Okanagan Nation Chiefs Executive Council (CEC) wrote to Minister Neill, expressing concerns about the order being rescinded without consultation or a meeting with the Syilx Okanagan Nation.

In response, a new temporary protection order has been issued for the Salmon River watershed after more than 200 adult Chinook salmon entered the watershed. However, continued low streamflows threaten their survival. To protect returning fish, agricultural and identified industrial water-use restrictions will again be required.
